Main Goals for Position:

As a uniformed volunteer they will aim to enhance the visitor experience by creating a welcoming environment and providing excellent customer service to all park visitors. They will work to improve merchandise sales by actively promoting park products and sharing detailed information to assist visitors in making informed purchases. Maintaining store organization is a priority, with regular inventory checks and restocking as needed. The volunteer will strive to deliver accurate information about park history, programs, and events, enriching visitors' understanding and appreciation of the park. Additionally, they will actively inform visitors about upcoming park programs and events to encourage participation and increase community engagement. Facilitating smooth operations will involve managing cash register transactions efficiently, answering inquiries, and maintaining an orderly workspace. The volunteer will gather informal feedback from visitors regarding their shopping experience and the information provided, using insights to identify areas for improvement. Finally, fostering a collaborative atmosphere by working closely with fellow volunteers and park staff will ensure smooth daily operations and excellent service.

Position Duties:

  • Operate the cash register and handle customer transactions accurately.
  • Stock retail items in the park store, ensuring shelves are organized and well-displayed.
  • Greet park visitors and provide a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Answer questions about merchandise and assist visitors in making purchases.
  • Provide information about the park, including orientation, directions, and available programs and events.
  • Share details about the visitor center and exhibit area, and initiate the park film for visitors.
  • Offer accurate information on park history and the early years and life of Abraham Lincoln.
  • Stock brochure displays to ensure visitors have access to relevant information.
  • Answer telephone inquiries regarding park information and store offerings.
  • Operate office equipment as needed for daily tasks and communications.
  • Record visitor statistics to help monitor attendance and engagement.
  • Assist in the opening and closing the building according to established procedures and protocols.

Working Environment and Safety Considerations:


Working Environment:

  • Indoor environment: Volunteer will be indoors in a closed climate controlled structure. Noise levels in the structure will fluctuate depending on visitation patters influenced by time of year, special events, and field trips. During busy times, it can be chaotic and fast passed.

Climate:

  • Seasonal Variations: The climate in Kentucky features four distinct seasons. Summers can be hot and humid, while winters are mild but can bring cold temperatures and occasional snow.
  • Rainfall: The region experiences moderate rainfall, particularly in spring and early summer, which may affect outdoor activities and planning.
  • Weather Preparedness: Volunteers should be prepared for changing weather conditions, with appropriate gear for both hot and cold weather.

Physical Demands:

  • Mobility: Volunteers may stand for periods for up to half an hour at a time.
