If you believe in the power of words to invite and support change, and if you are intrested in helping us grow to meet the needs of our community, please apply to become part of the word-loving, changemaking ecosystem that is the Transformative Language Arts Network (TLAN) Board of Directors.
At the end of December many of our current board members are completing their terms. While we are in conversation with interested community members, as a small-but-mighty national non-profit we also want to open our call to a wider range of voices and experiences.
We're at a moment where the work TLArtists do is essential and our board members are foundational to continuing that work. Please take a look at who we are and what our board members do. If you're intrigued, apply or reach out to ask questions. Your words and presence could make a profound difference.
The pragmatics:
New board member terms begin at our January 2025 board meeting (usually the second Tuesday of the month) and continue for a two- or three-year term. Meetings last 90 minutes, occur monthly, and we ask that board members attend at least 80% of our meetings per year.
The board meets (mostly through Zoom, and when we have annual conferences or other gatherings, in person) to collectively guide the development of the TLA Network. Everyone on the board commits to specific tasks or roles (some for the duration of their terms, and some for the duration of the task).
We ask all board members to:
- Collectively fulfill the basic responsibilities of a nonprofit board.
- Commit to a two or three-year term on the board.
- Commit to monthly Zoom meetings (which will also be recorded in case you need to watch a meeting afterwards), which run 60-90 minutes in length.
- Check and participate via Basecamp (a project management website we use and can teach you about) weekly.
- Commit to attend face-to-face meetings when we have in-person TLA conference.
- Maintain membership in the TLA Network.
- Work collaboratively with an active and lively board.
- Contribute to developing the TLA Network through participation in specific tasks or roles, including serving as committee members or chairs or taking on a seasonal task.
- Plan on contributing 3-6 hours/month in board and committee or specific role tasks.
Our application period closes Dec. 2, 2024.

Mission Statement
The Transformative Language Arts Network is a national 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Our mission is to support and promote individuals and organizations that use the spoken, written, or sung word as a tool for personal and community transformation.
Description
We foster the growth of the field and profession of Transformative Language Arts (TLA), by providing spaces, both physical and electronic, where people interested in TLA can share resources, network, learn, and enhance their capacity to practice it in their communities.
Since 2005, we have provided education, training, mentorship, and community-building for all who use the spoken, written, and sung word for change, growth, and freedom. Together, we’re building a more just, peaceful, and creative future through the power of our words.
TLArtists are academics, activists, artists, community leaders, composers, educators, facilitators, healers, health professionals, musicians, performers, playwrights, poets, singer songwriters, storytellers, teachers, therapists, religious leaders, youth workers, writers and more.
