Latino Equality Alliance's December Community Clean Up
ORGANIZATION: Latino Equality Alliance
Please visit the new page to apply.
Latino Equality Alliance hosts a bi-monthly Community Clean Up at rotating locations throughout Boyle Heights and Southeast LA. We invite community members to join us on December 7th, 2024 Saturday morning to help keep our community spaces clean through community building and picking up trash with one another.
Why: This volunteer opportunity will help our Community Clean Up increase the amount of trash we are able to pick up and the area we are able to cover as a group. This will lead to higher feelings of accomplishment from our participants once they see all the trash bags piling up that we were able to take off the park area!
Who: The mission of Latino Equality Alliance (LEA), a project of Community Partners, is to advocate for safety, equity, and wellness for the Latinx Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer + community. Our organization strongly focuses on youth empowerment, family acceptance, educational equity, public health, and civic engagement. Through coalitions, we strive to build power to elevate the LGBTQ+ voices in Boyle Heights and the greater East Side communities of Los Angeles.
What to Expect:
Volunteers will register with LEA staff upon arrival.
Volunteers will walk around neighborhood streets, sometimes harsh pavements, up/down sidewalk, and sometimes on uneven or wet Park grass.
Volunteers will carry their own trash bags and fill them up as they collect trash, sometimes they get heavy. We find trash bins along the way to dispose of them and get new bags.
Snacks and water will be provided, as well as equipment for the clean-up like gloves, trash bags, trash pickers, and vests.
After an ice-breaker and picture, all volunteers and staff will walk in groups around the neighborhood, picking up trash.
At the end, we all make it back to the initial meet up point, and put supplies away.
Volunteers will help distribute and collect trash pickers, gloves, trash bags, and neon vests to participants.
What's Required:
Senstivity and awareness to volunteer in a primarily LGBTQ+ space that is focused on the intersection of the Latinx and Queer community.
Masks are encouraged but not required. Most people that come tend to be unmasked.
Where to go upon arrival: Please be on the lookout for people in bright neon safety vests and people in a group. Jesica leads the clean-ups and will be present the day-of. LEA staff will arrive at 8:30am. Clean-up registration starts at 9am, but feel free to come early.
