Volunteers in the Small Craft Department will participate in the stabilization, repair, and restoration of the museum’s watercraft collection. Work may include carpentry, painting, metal work, rigging and engine maintenance. Some work may include the use of hand, electric or battery-operated power tools.
Individuals may also be involved in the operation of powered vessels and rowing or sailing of various small craft from the museum’s collection, with possible exposure to the extreme weather conditions. The volunteer’s supervisor or vessel captain will determine if volunteers are qualified and capable of serving aboard a vessel. While working on or over water, life-preservers must be worn at all times, and by all individuals.
Volunteers are required to complete all training courses relevant to the work they conduct, including but not limited to, shop/tool safety, motorboat operator training, hazardous material awareness, fall protection and confined space awareness.
Work sites include but are not limited to the Small Craft Shop on Hyde Street Pier, park storage facilities in San Leandro California and numerous off-site locations throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.
All active maritime volunteers are placed with a National Park Service uniformed employee who acts as the lead supervisor of the given volunteer service area. This assigned individual is the volunteer’s first-in-line supervisor for individual scheduling, assignments, required safety and operations training sessions
This is a non-paid volunteer position. Experience not required. Volunteers must serve a minimum of 8 hours per month. Lodging assistance is not available.
