Open Gym Volunteer
ORGANIZATION: HOPE STREET MINISTRIES INC
Please visit the new page to apply.
Hi! We are looking for adults who want to spend time in the gym at our community center and be a positive person. When the gym is slow, you could spend time in there playing with the guys. When the gym gets busier you could watch basketball games and make sure conflict doesn't arise. Small things come up sometimes around fouls or things, you could help to keep games moving and make sure everyone gets on the court.
We have a lot of young men (18-30ish) who come to our community center during the day to play basketball. They could use positive male role models. Positive adult men would be great to have around as people for the young men to look up to. Women would also make great volunteers, but think men would be wonderful to add to the volunteer team! By nature, our organization is really relational. We love to have volunteers present to meet people where they are at.
We value consistency. Best case scenario, you could commit to coming once a week from 12pm-3:30pm on a weekday!
Our values are of community, safety and cultivating hope in Jesus!

Mission Statement
Hope Street is the Greenhouse for People on 26th and Capitol. We give broken men, women and children a safe place to grow. We cultivate hope and build community as we live out the ministry of Jesus on the northside of Milwaukee. Hope Street provides housing and healing to about 50 men, women, and children whose lives have been profoundly affected by the toxic environment they grew up in, their own choices, or drug and alcohol abuse. Empowered by the active Grace of Christ, the staff, volunteers and members cultivate a nurturing community in which we can live, learn and develop new habits that help people flourish.
Description
Since 1999, we have provided housing and healing in the Greenhouse for People on 26th and Capitol. We started as a resource for men with backgrounds of drug and alcohol abuse and those coming from incarceration. We soon began welcoming men and women, and eventually in 2012, we began welcoming men and women coming from any form of brokenness. In 2013, when a woman found herself facing the choice of moving out of Hope Street prematurely to care for her otherwise displaced child, we let a child stay at Hope Street temporarily, which eventually turned into permanently. At that time we became the only transitional living facility in Milwaukee that allowed men, women and children, and the only facility that allowed people to stay beyond 24 months.
Located in the Garden Homes Neighborhood in the 53206 zip code, Hope Street has a 24 unit apartment building. Here, we are able to house about 50 men, women and children at any given time. Now we are building Shechem at Hope Street, a community center complete with a gym, classrooms, cafe, resource center and event spaces that will open this August. Shechem at Hope Street will provide our members who move out of Hope Street a place to remain connected. It will also give us room to welcome our neighborhood into the same sort of transformation that happens at Hope Street. Our Transplant Programming will take place in both our current building and at Shechem at Hope Street.
