Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Background

The Frederick Douglass Oratorical Contest is an annual event at the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site open to students of all abilities ages 6 to 18. ASL interpreters or interpreters to translate ASL to English will be provided as well. Contestants are grouped into categories based on age (elementary, junior, junior high, and high school) and deliver a memorized portion of a Douglass speech in front of judges. The contestants are rated based on an established rubric and 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd place winners are selected for each category.

The contest will be held during the day on December 4th & 5thvirtually , and Saturday, December 6th & 7th in-person at the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site Visitor Center ( 1411 W Street SE Washington, DC 20020) . Multiple volunteer timeslots are available during those times (9am-12pm, 1pm-4pm).

Volunteer Judges

The Frederick Douglass National Historic Site is seeking volunteer judges for the oratorical contest. Ideal volunteer candidates will have a background in theatre or performing arts, public speaking, education or history, but this is not a requirement. Preference will be given to individuals who volunteered for the contest in the past and have experience with the contest. Ideally, each session will have 4-6 judges.

The oratorical contest is accessible to deaf and hard of hearing students, and we welcome volunteers who are ASL interpreters and volunteers who are deaf or hard of hearing volunteers to be judges for the contest.

Judges will be provided with the transcripts of the five speeches students can choose from for this year’s contest, along with background historical materials and context. Volunteers must read and study all material in advance. This essential background knowledge will help volunteers evaluate each student’s performance to the best of their ability. Additional resources and information about the contest can be found on the park website.
