The National Organization for Women (NOW) Austin chapter is dedicated to advancing gender equality and justice for all, with a special focus on the intersectional issues affecting women of color. As part of our commitment to racial justice, we work tirelessly to combat systemic racism and advocate for policies that ensure equal opportunities for all.
Position Overview:
We are seeking a passionate and proactive Racial Justice Volunteer Policy Advocate to join our dynamic team. This volunteer will play a key role in tracking and analyzing relevant legislation, advocating for policies that promote racial equity, and organizing advocacy efforts such as letter-writing campaigns, rallies, and other initiatives. If you're dedicated to racial justice and passionate about using policy as a tool for change, this is an excellent opportunity to make an impact.
Key Responsibilities:
- Track Legislation: Monitor local, state, and national legislation that impacts racial justice, including but not limited to policies related to healthcare, criminal justice, voting rights, and education.
- Policy Analysis: Review and analyze the implications of proposed legislation on communities of color, particularly women of color.
- Advocacy Campaigns: Organize and execute advocacy efforts, such as letter-writing campaigns, petitions, and rallies, to influence policymakers on critical racial justice issues.
- Collaboration: Work closely with the Austin NOW board, other volunteers, and partner organizations to ensure a unified approach to policy advocacy.
- Communication: Draft clear and persuasive messaging for emails, social media, and other communication channels to engage the community in advocacy efforts.
- Research: Stay informed on racial justice issues and propose relevant policy positions and actions for the organization.
Qualifications:
- A strong commitment to racial justice and gender equity.
- Knowledge of local, state, and national policies affecting communities of color.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with policy research, advocacy, or activism is a plus, but not required.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Proficient in using Google Docs, email platforms, and social media.
Time Commitment:
This is a volunteer position with flexible hours. We ask for a commitment of approximately 5-10 hours per week. Regular meetings with the Racial Justice Committee will take place bi-weekly, and you will have the opportunity to attend additional events and actions.
