A key role within UDS is Advocacy Director, who will coordinate communications with Washington and Oregon state elected officials, as well as coordinating with the American Coalition for Ukraine. Position Overview:
The Political Advocacy Director will spearhead the organization’s efforts to influence policymakers, media outlets, and the international community in support of Ukraine. This role requires a deep understanding of the geopolitical landscape, strong relationships with key stakeholders, and the ability to craft and execute comprehensive advocacy campaigns. The Political Advocacy Director will be instrumental in shaping the organization’s messaging and strategic direction as it relates to government and diplomatic engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop Advocacy Strategies: Lead the development and execution of advocacy plans aimed at influencing U.S. and international government policies, fostering support for Ukraine, and securing political and military aid.
  • Engage with Policymakers: Build and maintain relationships with lawmakers, government agencies, and political influencers to advocate for increased support for Ukraine through direct lobbying efforts, meetings, and coalition-building.
  • Policy Research & Analysis: Monitor and analyze geopolitical trends, legislative developments, and international responses to the conflict in Ukraine. Provide regular reports and recommendations to the executive team and board of directors.
  • Draft Policy Proposals & Briefings: Prepare policy proposals, white papers, talking points, and briefings to educate stakeholders on Ukraine’s needs, including sanctions, military aid, and humanitarian assistance. Tailor materials for different audiences, including members of Congress, European governments, and international organizations.
  • Coalition Building: Collaborate with allied organizations, think tanks, and advocacy groups to form coalitions and amplify the impact of pro-Ukraine efforts. Organize joint campaigns, events, and advocacy initiatives.
  • Media Outreach & Public Relations: Work closely with the communications team to engage media outlets, write op-eds, and participate in interviews to promote the organization’s advocacy goals. Ensure consistent messaging across platforms.
  • Organize Advocacy Events: Plan and execute events such as legislative briefings, conferences, panel discussions, and public forums to mobilize support for Ukraine’s cause. Engage high-profile speakers, experts, and policymakers.
  • Grassroots Advocacy Campaigns: Lead grassroots initiatives to engage and mobilize the public in support of Ukraine. This includes launching online petitions, social media campaigns, and letter-writing efforts to influence elected officials.
  • Track Legislation & Advocacy Impact: Monitor the success of advocacy efforts by tracking legislative outcomes, funding allocations, and shifts in political support. Provide regular updates to the executive team on progress toward advocacy goals.
  • Manage a team of unpaid volunteers working on all the above advocacy projects.
  • Advise the Executive Team: Serve as a key advisor to the executive team on political strategy and international advocacy, ensuring alignment between the organization's mission and political activities.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, international relations, public policy, or a related field. A master’s degree is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in political advocacy, public policy, or government relations, preferably with a focus on international or geopolitical issues.
  • Strong understanding of U.S. and international political systems, especially regarding foreign policy, defense, and humanitarian aid.
  • Proven track record of successfully influencing legislation or securing policy changes.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including experience in public speaking, lobbying, and media engagement.
  • Ability to manage complex advocacy campaigns and work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Deep passion for Ukraine’s sovereignty and a commitment to supporting its fight for freedom.
  • Experience working with nonprofits, think tanks, or international organizations focused on conflict, human rights, or defense is a plus.
