Saratoga National Fish Hatchery

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

Saratoga National Fish Hatchery (NFH) is just a few minute drive from Saratoga, Wyoming and is easily accessible via maintained county roads. Saratoga is a small town with plenty of small family-owned shops and restaurants. The North Platte River offers some of the best trout fishing in Wyoming and most of the Snowy Range trails are just a short drive away.

Our Mission is to raise Brown trout as broodstock and to produce Rainbow and Cutthroat trout for stocking. Our Brown trout broodstock are annually spawned in the fall for their eggs which are shipped all over the country and the production fish are raised for release by the state and for release on tribal lands in Wyoming. We also raise a breeding population of Federally Endangered Wyoming Toads.

We are seeking energetic and enthusiastic volunteers to assist us with general duties associated with fish and toad rearing, general facility maintenance and grounds keeping. Typical volunteer activities include daily fish feeding and care, cleaning rearing units, assisting with data collection, grounds maintenance, and keeping the facility clean. Saratoga NFH is open to the public year-round and volunteers will also have the opportunity to interact with visitors by giving tours of the facility or providing other outreach services.

We are asking for a 26 hours/week commitment from volunteers. Workdays and season length can be somewhat flexible, but our volunteer needs are from early May through October. We offer one RV pad for volunteers with 50-amp electrical service and both sewer and water hookups. The RV pad is nestled away in a private rural setting on the hatchery property and provides plenty of peace and solitude overlooking a wetlands area. We also have a washer and dryer on site for volunteer use. Cellular service is decent, and the hatchery office also has high speed wireless internet available for volunteers and we encourage volunteers to bring their computer for personal use. Please note that Wi-Fi is not available at the RV pad location so we encourage volunteers to bring other means for their own internet connectivity.

Applications should be submitted through the " Volunteer.gov " platform. After applications are received, we will review them and reach out to candidates for a phone interview. We are only recruiting for the 2025 season at this time and won't be considering applicants for future summers.

About U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

Location:

5275 Leesburg Pike, MS: NWRS Visitor Services, Bailey’s Crossroads, VA 22041, US

Mission Statement

Working with others to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.

Description

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the premier government agency dedicated to the conservation, protection, and enhancement of fish, wildlife and plants, and their habitats. We are the only agency in the federal government whose primary responsibility is the conservation and management of these important natural resources for the American public.

The agency includes both the National Wildlife Refuge System and the National Fish Hatchery System.

The Service's origins date back to 1871 when Congress established the U.S. Fish Commission to study the decrease in the nation’s food fishes and recommend ways to reverse that decline. (More on our history below.) Today, we are a diverse and largely decentralized organization, employing about 8,000 dedicated professionals working out of facilities across the country.
