ORGANIZATION: San Francisco HICAP

HICAP (Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program) in San Francisco is looking for motivated volunteers to help senior citizens and adults with disabilities in San Francisco understand their Medicare health insurance benefits, options, rights and current changes.

SF HICAP is funded by the State of California to provide assistance to people enrolled in or eligible for Medicare. Volunteer HICAP counselors provide free one-on-one counseling about Medicare benefits and consumer rights, supplemental insurance plan choices, billing and claims problems, and other Medicare-related health insurance issues to support the independence of people making choices that affect their health and financial well-being. Volunteer positions for special community education and long-term care insurance counseling are also available.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Background Check
  • Must be at least 21
  • Orientation or Training
  • Applicant volunteer needs to undergo minimum of 24 hours of initial training, 20 hours shadowing to be registered as a counselor, then maintain at least 40 hours of counseling/service and 12 hours of continuing education on annual calendar year.
  • Interest and aptitude in the areas of Medicare, related insurance and senior and disabilities issues. Ability to be objective and unbiased. Must comply with the program's confidentiality and conflict of interest directives.
