The UMLAUF is seeking help at our visitor services desk on weekends!

The UMLAUF's volunteers are our public facing ambassadors during our open hours.It's a rewarding role in which you get to have meaningful conversations with visitors about art, nature, and a love of Austin. This position is ideal for people seeking regular volunteer work in a calm environment witha strong sense of community! Our volunteers make this place run andwe're so appreciative.

Title: Front Desk Associate
Department: Visitor Services
Reports To: Museum Manager
Works With: All museum staff and the public
Responsibilities:

• Make admission and gift shop sales
• Inform visitors of the current exhibitions and collection
• Engage with visitors to provide a personable and welcoming experience
• Maintain a tidy Gallery and Gift Shop space
• Monitor the Gallery to ensure all Museum policies are followed
• Answer phone calls and general questions
• Must be comfortable using an iPad-style point of sale system and handling cash

Scheduling:

• Saturdays and Sundays.
• 11AM-1:30PM or 1:30PM-4PM shifts.
• Volunteers have the ability to choose their desired shifts on a shared calendar.
• We request volunteers commit to at least 1 shift per month for at least 1 year.

Physical Requirements:

• This position can be carried out either seated or standing.
• Use of the point of sale system and monitoring the behaviors of guests will require sight.

Onboarding, Training and Support:

• There is always a staff member present and engaged alongside the volunteer.
• A recorded training on front desk operations is available for viewing ahead of the shift.
• Volunteers are also trained day-of and shadow the staff member, taking turns checking guests in.
• We will request a background check and invite our volunteers to share or cover the cost (typically around $20, depends on states lived in previously). We are always happy to pay in full if this is a barrier to you, no questions asked. If you have questions or concerns about the background check, please don't hesitate to reach out.

About the Environment:

• This position takes place in an indoor, climate controlled art gallery. The gallery has large windows that provide ample natural light. Conversations are often amplified inside due to the acoustics of the space.
• Volunteers are welcome to and encouraged to stroll the outdoor grounds which are paved by a gravel trail.
• Volunteers are able to use a private staff restroom, kitchen with refrigerator and microwave, and have easy access to drinking water. Volunteers are welcome to bring snacks if needed.
