We’re excited to announce an OPEN CALL for people to serve on our Board of Directors in a voluntary capacity. As a community-centric organization, we want to ensure that we are intentionally recruiting people outside of our current network. We know that growing the size and diversity of our leadership team will lead to transformational growth for our organization and our students. If you care deeply about the brown youth in our region and want to see them succeed in life, we would love to hear from you.

MISSION

Our mission is to develop the next generation of brown entrepreneurs, one student at a time. We provide free entrepreneurial development training for high school and college students in the Metropolitan St. Louis area. All programs are available at no cost to the student or their family.

POSITION

The board of directors supports the work of Brownpreneurs and provides mission-based leadership and strategic governance. This is a working board. Board members are asked to contribute to the overall success of our organization and the community we serve.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the CEO as she develops and implements Brownpreneurs’ strategic plan.

  • Review the outcomes and metrics created by Brownpreneurs for evaluating its impact and regularly measuring its performance and effectiveness using those metrics.

  • Review agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings.

  • Approve Brownpreneurs’ annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions, being informed of and meeting all legal and fiduciary responsibilities.

  • Assist the CEO and board chair in identifying and recruiting other Board Members.

  • Partnering with the CEO and other board members to ensure that board resolutions are carried out.

  • Serve on committees or task forces and take on special assignments.

  • Represent Brownpreneurs to stakeholders, acting as an ambassador for the organization.

EXPECTATIONS

  • Attend and participate in meetings on a regular basis and special events as able.

  • Serve on subcommittees as necessary.

  • Be alert to community concerns that Brownpreneurs’ mission can address, objectives, and programs.

  • Help communicate and promote Brownpreneurs’ mission and programs to the community.

  • Become familiar with Brownpreneurs’ finances, budget, and financial/resource needs.

  • Understand the policies, procedures, and programming of Brownpreneurs.

MEETING & TIME COMMITMENT

  • The board of directors meets monthly. Meetings are not held in January or July.

  • Committees of the board meet an average of four times per year, depending on their respective work agenda.

  • Board members are asked to attend at least two special events per year.

Service on Brownpreneurs’ Board of Directors is without remuneration, except for administrative support, travel, and accommodation costs in relation to board duties.

THE APPLICATION/SELECTION PROCESS

Members of the board of directors will do an initial review of applications. The top candidates will be contacted for a phone interview/discussion.

Brownpreneurs is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in St. Louis, Missouri. We provide free entrepreneurial development training for brown high school and college students in the Greater St. Louis area. We teach them the principles of entrepreneurship and help them cultivate the mindset, character, and discipline to become successful entrepreneurs. It’s our mission to develop the next generation of brown entrepreneurs, one student at a time.

We empower our students to dream ambitiously, live audaciously, and hope beyond limits. Our programs are structured in a fun yet engaging way to equip them with the knowledge and confidence to become the highest and best version of themselves. W e also instill a sense of civic responsibility to help them understand the importance of giving back to their community.
