Whittier Narrows Nature Center Clean-up

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

The Whittier Narrows Natural Area and Nature Center (WNNC) is hosting a Nature Center Clean-up! This volunteer event is in collaboration with the Los Angeles County Parks & Recreation department (who manage the land) in support of USACE (who own the land) for habitat restoration for the Corps’ Whittier Narrows Dam Safety Modification Project environmental commitments. Volunteers will be removing non-native plants from the habitat restoration area (about 50 acres) to help native plants regrow. In addition to weeding, volunteers may be asked to help with sweeping, picking up litter, bagging leaves and raking.

The Whittier Narrows Nature Center is located along Durfee Avenue across the street from South El Monte High School in South El Monte, CA. Work will take place from 8am-12pm. Volunteers are welcome to stay and help that entire time or for a portion of that time. Volunteers should be 8 years of age or older.

Please bring plenty of water and your own snack(s). Sunscreen, a hat, lightweight pants, closed toe shoes, and a lightweight long-sleeved shirt are recommended. Tools, gloves, and PPE will be provided; however, you are more than welcome to bring your own weeding tools and gardening gloves. You are welcome to stay and eat your own lunch at one of the picnic tables after you’re done weeding and stay to explore the nature trails.

LA County Parks & Recreation will provide forms on site to register, or you may go to their website in advance to become a volunteer with the County at https://parks.lacounty.gov/becoming-a-volunteer/ and selecting "VOLUNTEER APPLICATION."

If you have any questions, please contact Colleen MacKay, WNNC Superintendent, Office: (626) 575-5523, colleen.mackay@parks.lacounty.gov.

Event Specific Information: This clean-up is to commemorate World Wetlands Day.
