Overview

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Connecticut is proud to bring its nationally-recognized School-Based Mentoring Program this fall to Truman Community School. This program will provide one-to-one mentoring to students by connecting youth referred by school personnel with screened, trained, and professionally support adult volunteers from the community. Students and their mentors meet in a structured, facilitated program environment each week throughout the school year to participate in character, relationship, and skill building opportunities, while having a ton of fun along the way. The program's focus is on starting a friendship, providing guidance, social-emotional well-being, and inspiring Littles to reach their potential.

Schedule

Volunteers are expected to attend weekly program sessions throughout the school year (approximately 20 in total between October and June). Sessions take place at West Middle School ( 114 Truman St, New Haven) on Thursday afternoons beginning at 3PM.

Activities

At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Connecticut, we believe that sometimes the best place to help a child realize their potential is right in their school. Our School-Based Mentoring Program creates a nurturing environment where children thrive under the guidance of their Bigs. These sessions, held in classrooms, gyms, and school libraries, have a profound impact on the lives of the children and bring peace of mind to parents.

Supported by professionally trained staff, our mentoring sessions are designed to be both fun and transformative. Activities range from one-on-one interactions to engaging group events, all aimed at character-building and fostering meaningful relationships. Our dedicated staff members are always present to ensure each session is productive and supportive.

Mentoring goes beyond academics. While some Littles may choose to discuss schoolwork or tackle homework with their Bigs, others might prefer playing a game of basketball in the gym or enjoying a board game together. The essence of our program is about building friendships, providing guidance, and inspiring Littles to reach their full potential.

By becoming a mentor, you have the opportunity to be a positive force in a child's life, helping them grow, learn, and dream big. Join us in making a lasting difference, one friendship at a time.
