Are you interested in bringing joy and being recognizable by almost everyone you meet? Are you good at acting and being understood without talking (but maybe making some noises)? Are you okay in an enclosed space? Are you able to be on your feet for long periods of time? Are you able to walk with a restricted line of sight? And finally, do you live in the Greater Los Angeles, California area and have your own means of transportation to/from local events? If yes, then volunteering to be Bobber - the Water Safety Dog in events with the US Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) Los Angeles District may be what you’re looking for.
Bobber - the Water Safety Dog is a trademarked character of the Corps. The costume is specifically designed for delivery of water safety education. The costume wearer must always remain anonymous, remaining in full costume while in public. Bobber does not talk; however, the wearer of the costume may bark. A Corps Park Ranger will accompany Bobber to keep the costume wearer safe due to the restricted movements and line of sight while in the costume. The Corps Park Ranger will communicate to the public on the costume wearer’s behalf to share important water safety messages with the event participants. Bobber may hand out coloring books and other water safety materials, give hugs, high fives, shake hands, and pose for pictures. The costume wearer needs to be animated and respond to the audience, while always being dignified, friendly and professional. The costume wearer should be mindful of Bobber’s safety image and avoid horseplay and refrain from any questionable or inappropriate behavior.
NOTE: If you have a heart condition, neck problems, or other medical conditions, you should not apply to volunteer to wear the costume. Instead, consider applying for the "Educational and/or Outreach Event Volunteer" position our District also has open for volunteers.
