The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides food benefits to low-income families to supplement their grocery budget so they can afford nutritious food essential to health and well-being. Food Bank For New York City’s SNAP specialists help New Yorker’s to determine if they are eligible and apply for benefits.

We are looking for SNAP Community Outreach volunteers to help spread the word about our SNAP services offered at healthcare partners. Volunteers will meet a Food Bank staff member at one of our healthcare partners at the start of their shift to receive instructions, talking points and flyers. Volunteers will then canvass the neighborhood to distribute flyers to local businesses and also encourage community members to visit our sites. All volunteers will need to attend a brief virtual orientation session led by Food Bank staff in advance of their first shift.

Things to consider:

  • Volunteers should be comfortable engaging with members of the public and speaking about Food Bank’s work.

  • Volunteers should be compassionate, patient, and sensitive to the needs of people experiencing food insecurity.

  • Bilingual volunteers are highly encouraged! Please let your onsite lead know if you speak a second language.

  • This is an active position; volunteers should be prepared to be walking/standing for the duration of the shift.

Schedule: 3 hour shifts are available on weekdays at sites in the Bronx and Brooklyn.

Next Steps: Interested volunteers can express interest on Food Bank's Volunteer Portal here: https://volunteer.foodbanknyc.org/opportunity/a0CQh00002QUcN0/snap-community-outreach or via email at volunteer@foodbanknyc.org.
