The Greenbelt Arts Center, the only live community theater in Greenbelt, is seeking volunteers to help produce No Laughing Matter written and directed by local playwright, Jeff Dunne. The play will run February 21 - March 8 2025. We are looking for people to help with all aspects of the show, including stage manager/assistant stage manager, stage crew, costuming, props, lights and sound (designers and operators), and set construction/painting/etc. The starting dates for these will depend on the specific responsibility. This is an opportunity to contribute to a live production and gain experience/learn by working with a director who has written and produced his own plays for many years.

About the playwright/director:
Jeff Dunne completed his first full-length play in 2015, and it received such positive recognition in festivals in 2016 that he began writing more actively. He now has over 175 scripts of various length, the majority of which are for stage but several for screen and radio as well. His works have won over a hundred awards and festivals, and seen more than 200 productions across four continents. His first novel, Nexus, was published in March 2023. You can learn more about Jeff's works by visiting www.bearcreations.org.

About the show:
No Laughing Matter is a romantic comedy that made its world premiere at the Shawnee Playhouse, Shawnee-on-Delaware as the winner of the Full-Length Play category in the 2017 Shawnee Original Playwright Series. In No Laughing Matter Alexei Dmitri Konstatntin Nikolay Sergei Stepanovich has just arrived in New York, leaving behind a flailing career as a comedian in his native Russia. On his way to find a job as a busboy, he has the misfortune to sit next to a British courier for the Russian intelligence agency, and now the FBI thinks the ex-comedian is a spy. The Bureau brings in bombshell superstar Agent Tara Butler. The mystery only thickens Angel reveals one last piece of evidence: an overheard conversation from the Brit that started the problem in the first place, and that suggests the real spy is hiding in plain sight at the FBI.

Please email jeff@bearcreations.org by October 31, 2024 to apply.

Mission Statement

Greenbelt Arts Center is both a Community Theater company, known for high-quality shows that showcase the experience and talent of our performers and crews who manage to fit their love of the performing arts into their busy lives, and a performance space for guest events and productions as scheduling permits.

Description

GAC is a "black box" theater. The seats may be re-arranged for each production, allowing maximum flexibility for directors. The three-quarter thrust is our most common arrangement, with audience surrounding the stage on three sides. A proscenium stage is possible here too, with the audience facing the stage which is framed like a picture with an arch. GAC has also used an arena arrangement (with seats on all four sides and the stage in the center), a turning stage, and a cafe-style seating arrangement with patrons at tables while they watch the show.

The theater can hold 85-100 audience members depending on the seating style chosen for the show. All seating is General Admission. There are no assigned seats.
