Curtis Canyon Designated Dispersed Camping Ambassador
ORGANIZATION: USDA Forest Service
Please visit the new page to apply.
The Curtis Canyon Area is a popular dispersed camping area on the Bridger-Teton National Forest. Just east of the town of Jackson, Wyoming, and on the eastern boundary of the National Elk Refuge the area sees a lot of tourists camping and visiting Grand Teton National Park and Jackson. There are incredible vistas, unique hiking opportunities, wildlife viewing and access to the Gros Ventre Wilderness. Due to the large amount of people seeking dispersed camping opportunities close to Jackson and Grand Teton National Park, the Forest Service has created a designation system where vehicles are only allowed in specific, numbered sites.
A camping ambassador is someone who provides visitors with education, information and keeps an eye on overall conditions of the area. Typically, they perform patrols of the area on a UTV or a truck. During these patrols, they greet campers, ensure they are staying in a designated site and not out of bounds, and provide them with information on how to camp responsibly: proper food storage in bear country, respecting stay limits, remembering to put out fires, pack out trash and dispose of human waste properly. Other duties include improving signage, checking fire-rings for abandoned campfires and communicating area-specific needs and issues to a Forest Service supervisor.
Per diem reimbursements may be provided. Volunteer would need their own RV or trailer for this position. As Curtis Canyon is a designated dispersed campsite, please note no hook up's are available but we are able to provide large water tanks to our volunteers who are dry camping.
