ORGANIZATION: Guiding Eyes for the Blind - Patterson & Yorktown

Guiding Eyes for the Blind is a world-renowned non-profit organization that has been training and placing guide dogs for 50 years. Guide dogs are provided free of charge to eligible persons, though it costs the organization upwards of $45,000 to breed, raise and train each dog for its important work. This cost is met by dedicated individuals, corporations and foundations who enable Guiding Eyes to contiue their important work. No government funding is provided.

We are seeking compassionate and reliable volunteer drivers to support blind or visually impaired individuals at Guiding Eyes for the Blind by assisting them with essential tasks such as grocery shopping, running errands, and providing transportation. Role: Volunteer DriverLocation: Yorktown Heights, NY
Time Commitment: Flexible (2-4 hours per week, based on your availability)
Start Date: Ongoing What You’ll Do:

  • Provide transportation for blind individuals to and from local stores, appointments, and activities.
  • Assist with shopping by gathering items from a list given by the clientele and bring the items back to the campus.
  • Offer a friendly, supportive presence while ensuring the person’s comfort and independence.
Requirements:
  • A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
  • Guiding Eyes will supply a vehicle, or you may drive your own.
  • Ability to comfortably assist with shopping needs.
  • A patient, kind attitude and the desire to make a difference in someone’s life.
  • Willingness to undergo basic orientation/training on working with the blind community.

Since 1954, Guiding Eyes has managed to thrive on goodness, even in the most difficult of times. We relied on the goodness of our loyal base of generous supporters, passionate staff and dedicated volunteers to come together to meet the growing needs of our diverse community of people with vision loss. Through this unwavering support and dedication, Guiding Eyes has graduated more than 10,000 guide dog teams. We believe in the powerful, meaningful change that our beautiful dogs bring to the lives of people facing the daily challenges that blindness and vision loss present.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, we provide all services completely free of charge to people who are blind or with vision loss. At Guiding Eyes, we rely upon the contributions of our generous donors to fulfill our mission.

Guiding Eyes for the Blind has two locations: Yorktown Heights and Patterson.
