In partnership with Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River (UPDE), National Canoe Safety Patrol (NCSP) members aid the d ivisions of interpretation and law enforcement, and represent the national park as a volunteer, interacting with visitors at boat launch sites and roving the Delaware River by canoe or kayak to promote safe river recreation and stewardship.


Duties of the NCSP Volunteer include, but are not limited to:

  • Performs canoe or kayak patrols on the river.
  • Provides river recreationists with information about river conditions, proper canoeing techniques, and river safety.
  • Performs river rescues and assists.
  • Provides initial action in first aid situations (must have or be willing to obtain wilderness first aid and CPR certifications).
  • Warns visitors of hazards and park regulations, contacting park Law Enforcement, Resource Management, or Maintenance Divisions as necessary.
  • Registers reports on lost and found items and incidents.
  • Provides information about nearby national park service areas, amenities and local points of interest.
  • Records daily visitor statistical information for use in compilation of park visitation reports.
  • Long periods of standing, hiking, and canoeing are required.
  • Swimming ability is required.

This position requires volunteers to be signed up, active members in good standing with our partner organization, National Canoe Safety Patrol. When you apply to this position, you will receive the next steps to complete the membership process.

*Please note that becoming an NCSP member requires a yearly membership fee*

  • Equipment is available for members to use on patrols on a first come first served basis.
  • Tent camping is provided.
  • Comprehensive 2-day training provided on May 4th & 5th.
