We are looking for board members from diverse communities passionate about disability and with gifts in business, finance, networking, and development.

Ensuring we are fulfilling our mission and purpose.
The board supports L’Arche North Carolina in living the Mission by studying and understanding the Identity and Mission of L’Arche, and both the Federation and L’Arche North Carolina mandate.

Ensuring integrity, financial, and human resources.
Ensuring the legal, ethical, and financial integrity of L’Arche North Carolina by overseeing that L’Arche is acting within the law, is maintaining high standards of financial accountability, and is developing the financial capacity to meet its current and future needs.

Determining, evaluating, and monitoring L’Arche North Carolina’s programs & services.
The board evaluates whether current and proposed programs and services are consistent with the organization’s stated mission and purposes. The board also has the responsibility for ensuring, through planning and evaluation, quality, cost-effective programs and services. *Note: it is the staff’s responsibility to creatively initiate and conduct programs.

Promoting the message of L’Arche North Carolina.
The board ensures the credibility of the community with local authorities and promoting the message of L’Arche in the triangle and beyond by ensuring compliance with care and quality standards, and by advocating strongly for L’Arche and for the gifts and human rights of all people with an intellectual disability.

Evaluating and supporting the Community Leader/Executive Director.
It is the board’s responsibility to regularly evaluate the Community Leader using the process set by L’Arche USA in conjunction with the Federation representative. The board also supports the Community Leader by:

  • Introducing the CL to other community leaders and organizations;

  • Inviting the CL to important social functions;

  • Encourage, compliment, and recognize the CL for exceptional initiatives;

  • Encouraging the CL to take professional and personal leave for renewal;

  • Assisting the CL when members overstep prerogatives or misunderstand their roles;

  • Being sensitive to family situations and needs; and

  • Providing constructive feedback and assessing the CL’s performance in relation to the board’s performance.

Strategically planning for the future.
Contributing to the future development and growth of L’Arche North Carolina and the Federation by developing, in collaboration with the appropriate L’Arche leaders, an on-going strategic planning process to support the implementation of the community, country and international mandates, and by working in solidarity with the larger family of L’Arche in the Federation.
