Hello! Thank you for your interest in this AmeriCorps position. Please apply to this position at https://my.americorps.gov/mp/listing/viewListing.do?fromSearch=true&id= 124517 in order to be considered. Good luck, and we look forward to hearing from you!

About the Position:

In this position, you will be placed with Tapestry Farms, an urban farm system located in the Quad Cities of Iowa that reclaims underutilized local land to grow culturally specific fresh produce and flowers. Refugees and volunteers work together in 10 plots using regenerative growing practices to benefit the community. Free or low-cost, culturally relevant produce, offered at accessible locations is one of the main priorities of Tapestry Farms. Produce is distributed to people in the Quad Cities who live with limited resources by delivery and through a network of food pantries.

As an Urban Farm Access VISTA with Tapestry Farms, you will increase the capacity and efficiency of existing urban farm sites, identify additional sites in food deserts to establish new garden plots, and coordinate with the local food pantry to expand offerings of culturally relevant foods. Your service will contribute to the sustainability of Tapestry Farm’s volunteer network through the establishment of a volunteer welcome initiative and programming to increase volunteers’ understanding of food access and security. During your term, you will gain the valuable skill of fund allocation for a cause by helping with the identification and acquisition of financial assistance to increase growing operations. You will also gain a strong understanding of the local food system and how to navigate the government programs that support our work and the well-being of the people we serve.

About Nourish Iowa:

As a Nourish Iowa member, you will serve among a cohort of VISTA members throughout Iowa, sponsored by the Center for Energy & Environmental Education at the University of Northern Iowa, & will have frequent opportunities to share knowledge within this community through regular cohort-wide meetings & site visits. In addition to all standard AmeriCorps VISTA benefits, you will engage regularly with thought leaders in local food and be invited to professional development opportunities coordinated by a VISTA Leader in your cohort.

About Community Food Security VISTA Project

Location:

8106 Jennings Drive, Cedar Falls, IA 50614, US

Mission Statement

We are working to increase food access for all Iowans, especially those who experience food insecurity, and believe in abundant, accessible, equitable food and land access.

Description

Our VISTA projects and partner organizations pursue equity in the food system for all Iowans, with the intent to improve the intersections of the food system with public health, community nutrition, gainful employment, inclusive communities, and economic justice. Whether through farmer training and the development of an incubator farm; the Garden in Every Lot program which simplifies and promotes home production of fresh food; the Sustainable Iowa Land Trust which preserves and redistributes farmland for future generations and disadvantaged populations; or We Arose Co-op and Feed Iowa First which have aggressively increased supplies of local food in pantries and other hunger relief outlets; Our organization is making strides toward the eradication of poverty, a core tenet of VISTA since its establishment in the 1960s.
