Goals:
Based on the descriptions of roles, provide guest with general orientation, directional and interpretive information on the facilities, cultural, and natural resources at The National Parks of St. Croix. Volunteers will facilitate responsible recreation and enjoyment of the same.
Provide orientations and information regarding park resources and facilities. Serve as front line representatives of The National Parks of St. Croix and the National Park Service, while providing exceptional service to the guests. Guest Services Volunteers may deliver interpretive programs upon completion of additional interpretive trainings, development and approval of interpretive outlines and submit to periodic interpretive evaluations and audits. Guest Services Volunteers may choose a desired primary role (listed below) but MUST be willing and able to work other roles as necessary to fulfil the NPS mission and park needs as directed by their supervisor.
Duties:
- Welcome guests and provide directional and informational orientations.
- Maintain a well-stocked publications rack with authorized publications.
- Record visitor statistics on the daily form.
- Be comfortable with children and familiar with the Junior Ranger program, including how to distribute Junior Ranger booklets, check the booklets for completion, swear in the new Junior Ranger, and present them with a badge.
- Know the functions of The National Parks of St. Croix mobile application and be able to provide directions for guests use.
- Operating the America’s National Parks bookstore.
- Processing sales, restocking, and completing daily reports.
- May provide Interpretive programs if desired, qualified, and have met the necessary training and auditing requirements.
- May be required to complete walking rounds (roving) around the Christiansted National Historic Site buildings, including Fort Christiansvaern, while interacting with park guests.
Qualifications:
- Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and accept supervision.
- Excellent public speaking skills and interpersonal abilities.
- Ability to work enthusiastically with diverse audiences.
- Ability to read, remember, and transmit accurate content according to interpretive goals.
- Sound judgment in response to challenging situations.
- Positive attitude and ability to build respectful working relationships.
- A federal background investigation may be required.
Length of Commitment:
Guest Service Volunteers must commit to the following (one day a week) unless hours are expressly stated in Service Description and Agreement.
- 8 hours (9:30am - 4:30pm), 4 days a month
- 4 hours (9:30am - 1:30pm), 4 days a month
- 4 hours (1:30pm - 4:30pm), 4 days a month
- Other (as defined between the VIP and the VIP supervisor).
*If "Other is chosen the hours and days must be listed in box 26 on OF-301a (Volunteer Service Agreement)
Guest Service Volunteers will be expected to commit to at least 360 hours a year unless expressly stated otherwise in box 26 of OF-301a (Volunteer Service Agreement). The Service Agreement may be terminated at any time, for any reason by either party.
*All Guest Service VIP Service Agreements expire on September 30. Each VIP wishing to remain a volunteer at the National Parks of St. Croix must sign a new VIP Service Agreement by September 30. At that time the VIP may also request a change in their primary role.
