Use your skills and inspire at the Abraham Lincoln’s Birthplace with the next generation! Guide K-12 th grade students on field trips and help create a meaningful experience for them at the park. The Field Trip Guide will help give programing to youth groups such as scouts, student groups, or conduct other kids activities. This may include working with groups in the Visitor Centers, at the Memorial Building, or on-site on trails or the grounds to conduct activities. Choose a schedule that works best for you, setting your own dates of availability. Typically, the Education program assistant works a minimum of 8 hours a month. May vary with time of year (due to school field trips).

Position Duties:

As a volunteer, you will provide a fun and educational experience for students, helping them understand the significance of the resources of the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace. This may be working directly with students, as well as tasks that help maintain the education program.

This includes:

  • Following the schedule to provide a guided tour of the trail/park
  • Keeping the group engaged and building curiosity
  • Assist Education staff with prepping content and materials for programs as well as for on-site and off-site events.
  • Help plan special events, such as summer camps or special kid’s days.
  • Leading field trips. Field trips for all ages occur throughout the year.
  • Lead family style tours for youth focused groups, such as homeschool/family tours at the Memorial Building or nature walks on the trails.
  • As needed, greet park visitors and provide information about park through orientation, directions, crowd control, and other duties as assigned.
  • Use of a government vehicle may be required while on duty.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to communicate effectively and enthusiastically with members of the public of all ages.
  • Have a strong interest in natural resources and conservation.
  • Must have a positive attitude.
  • Ideal for experienced educators or presenters (such as retired teachers), or for those wishing to become educators.

Requirements:

  • Complete necessary administrative paperwork (Volunteer Service Agreement, Job Hazard Analysis, etc.).
  • Wear provided volunteer uniform while performing duties.
  • Report observed violations to appropriate staff. Do not perform law enforcement duties.
  • Represent the National Park Service in a professional manner.
  • Record volunteer hours in binder at the Front Desk or digitally online.
  • May be required to undergo a general background investigation and an additional level of investigation to work with children.

Work Environment: Volunteer may work in a variety of settings, indoors and out, depending on duties being preformed, varying from the park visitor center, memorial building, birthplace grounds, picnic area, off-site, or Knob Creek locations.

Conditions of Service:

  • This volunteer reports directly to the Volunteer Coordinator, or Education Technician when appropriate.
  • Housing may be available for this position.

Physical Demands: None.

Training:

The Education Program Assistant must complete environmental education training before the Education Program Assistant may serve as a tour guide and presenter for special events. Training will cover topics such as: the mission, history, and management of the park, safety, environmental education, and place-based learning. Moreover, training regarding interpretation techniques for all ages will be given. If driving a government vehicle, volunteer must complete the appropriate driving forms and Defensive Driving training to be allowed to drive a government vehicle.

Other comments:

The Abraham Lincoln Birthplace, Birthplace unit hours are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Hours worked will typically fall within this timeframe. Typically, the Environmental Education Park Ranger works a minimum 8 hours a month. Shift lengths are negotiable.
