Description:
Do you have a talent for organizing? Do you love working with kids and youth groups? We need your skills as out education office assistant. Lead fun activities and games at the park to visitors, youth groups, and K-12 th students. This volunteer will also organize supplies, construct activities (cutting, laminating, assembling) and maintain current supplies. Work will very greatly with the changes in time of the year. A day may look like hanging kid’s art displays, leading kid’s activity, or sorting construction paper. Work with groups may include the Visitor Centers, at the Memorial Building, or on-site on trails or the grounds to conduct activities. Choose a schedule that works best for you, setting your own dates of availability. Typically, volunteers in this position work a minimum of 8 hours a month. May vary with time of year.
Position Duties:
As a volunteer, you will provide a fun and educational experience for visitors, youth groups, and students; helping them understand the significance of the resources of the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace. Volunteers may be required to wear the provided volunteer uniform and badge and represent the National Park Service by acting in a courteous and professional manner with visitors, park staff, and other volunteers.
Duties also includes:
- Following the schedule to provide kids/youth activity at trail/park
- Keeping the group engaged and building curiosity
- Assist Education staff with prepping content and materials for programs as well as for on-site and off-site events.
- Help with special events, such as summer camps or special kid’s days.
- Assist with field trips. Field trips for all ages occur throughout the year.
- Lead family style tours for youth focused groups, such as homeschool/family tours at the Memorial Building or nature walks on the trails.
- As needed, greet park visitors and provide information about park through orientation, directions, crowd control, and other duties as assigned.
- Use of a government vehicle may be required while on duty.
Qualifications:
- Ability to communicate effectively and enthusiastically with members of the public of all ages.
- Have a strong interest in natural resources and conservation.
- Must have a positive attitude.
- Ideal for experienced educators or presenters (such as retired teachers), or for those wishing to become educators.
Requirements:
- Complete necessary administrative paperwork (Volunteer Service Agreement, Job Hazard Analysis, etc.).
- Wear provided volunteer uniform while performing duties.
- Report observed violations to appropriate staff. Do not perform law enforcement duties.
- Represent the National Park Service in a professional manner.
- Record volunteer hours in binder at the Front Desk or digitally online.
- May be required to undergo a general background investigation and an additional level of investigation to work with children.

Work Environment: Volunteer may work in a variety of settings, indoors and out, depending on duties being preformed, varying from the park visitor center, memorial building, birthplace grounds, picnic area, off-site, or Knob Creek locations.
Conditions of Service:
- This volunteer reports directly to the Volunteer Coordinator, or Education Technician when appropriate.
- Housing may be available for this position.

Training:
The Education Office Assistant must complete environmental education training before the Education Program Assistant may serve as a tour guide and presenter for special events. Training will cover topics such as: the mission, history, and management of the park, safety, environmental education, and place-based learning. Moreover, training regarding interpretation techniques for all ages will be given. If driving a government vehicle, volunteer must complete the appropriate driving forms and Defensive Driving training to be allowed to drive a government vehicle.
Other comments:
The Abraham Lincoln Birthplace, Birthplace unit hours are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Hours worked will typically fall within this timeframe. Typically, the Environmental Education Park Ranger works a minimum 8 hours a month. Shift lengths are negotiable.
