Description:
- Facility Maintenance Volunteer Technicians donate their time and talents to assist National Park Staff in various duties and tasks related to the facilities and upkeep of The National Parks of St. Croix. Volunteers may be assigned independently or accompany NPS personnel to complete their daily assignments, such as lawn care, facility and equipment repair, trail maintenance, invasive species removal, park beautification and much more. The volunteer will be responsible for their own lodging as well as transportation to and from the project office. This position will report to the Facility Maintenance Operations Specialist and/or Volunteer Program Manager.
Some Sample Duties Include but not limited to:
- Simple and routine maintenance and repair of grounds, park area, exterior structures, buildings, equipment, related utilities, etc.
- Assists higher graded facility workers or tradesmen in the performance of their work.
- Minor carpentry and plumbing repairs
- Performs minor painting as needed
- Accompany NPS staff to designated sites of operation such as Buck Island and Salt River.
- Servicing restrooms, comfort stations and other visitor facilities.
- Makes minor small engine repairs as needed and refers problems to higher graded workers.
- Accompany staff for trail maintenance and custodial throughout the three NPS Units on St. Croix
Preferred skills:
- Able to use basic hand tools, handheld power tools, riding lawn mower(s), etc. Trainings and certifications for any equipment provided by The National Parks of St. Croix will be provided. Preferred skills: basic carpentry/plumbing, minor electrical wiring, property maintenance experience, basic landscaping, small motor skills, heavy equipment operation, painting, chainsaw operation, and/or construction.
Requirements:
Volunteers are required to wear the provided Volunteer uniform and represent the National Park Service by acting in a courteous and professional manner with visitors, park staff, and other volunteers. Ability to learn to use various powered and/or hand tools and use proper safety practices such as wearing PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). Experience or knowledge of above duties and skills are preferred but not required.
Work Environment:
Volunteers will work indoors and out and will be exposed to heat, humidity, and UV rays.
Physical Demands:
Walking, stopping and bending in conditions varying from heat intensity and humidity. May be required to lift items weighing 50 lbs.
