We're excited to invite you to our last volunteer event at the Hazelwood Food Recycling Site of the season! As a key part of our community, your involvement helps us make significant environmental and social impacts through our sustainable initiatives.
This October we will be highlighting compose sifting and garden preparation for winter. We will be emphasizing harvesting, weeding, and composting activities. We will be partnering with Local Composting Incitives to enhance composing efforts.
This event will take place on October 19 th from 10 am - 1 pm at 4501 Sylvan Avenue
Pittsburgh, PA 15207.
When you arrive, make sure to pull to the site closest to home rule street (at the end of Sylvan). You will see two large sheds, a bunch of compost bins and portable toilet to help identify the location. Make sure to bring closed toe shoes, long pants, and wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty! Insect repellent and sunscreen (if it’s sunny) are also recommended. We will have gloves available, but you’re also welcome to bring your own.
We will also have lunch available, but we encourage you to bring your own water!
By joining us at the Hazelwood site, you'll contribute directly to our mission of sustainability and witness first-hand the difference we're making.
Why You Should Attend:
- Direct Impact: Your participation helps us divert more waste from landfills, produce nutrient-rich compost, and grow fresh produce for local distribution.
- Community Engagement: Meet like-minded volunteers who are passionate about environmental stewardship and community development.
- Learning Opportunities: Gain valuable insights into sustainable practices and how we manage community-driven recycling efforts.
Your support is not just valuable-it’s vital to our continued success and impact. We look forward to seeing you there and working together to make a positive change in our community.

Description
Center of Life (COL) is a community-empowerment organization located in the Greater Hazelwood Neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA. Our programs focus on music and arts, athletics, and education.
Founded in 2002 by Tim Smith, COL stands with the people of Hazelwood as they strive to be strong and make their communities strong. With its roots planted deeply in the community and supported by extraordinary partners, COL serves Hazelwood and its surrounding communities with the rich academic out-of-school programs and outstanding experiences in music and arts. COL employs a holistic approach to community through all of its programs, believing that commitment to others is most productive when you walk with those served in their schools, homes and families.
Center of Life hosts multiple youth programs including The KRUNK Movement, Center of Life Jazz, Fusion, and Camp Hazelwood. These programs combine music, art, dance, academics, and athletics rooted in the academic content areas and curricula of the Pennsylvania Department of Education Academic Standards.
Center of Life also hosts community and family engagement to provide families and community members with the knowledge, tools, and strategies they need to move from surviving to thriving.
At Center of Life we believe "everything is about people."
