The BLM Las Cruces District Office is looking for volunteer Site Hosts for the Dripping Springs Natural Area for the 2025 spring/summer season!

Position available April 1st - September 30th, 2025. Couples encouraged to apply.

Located a 30-minute drive from the city of Las Cruces in the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument, Aguirre Springs Recreation Area is one of the most popular recreation sites in southern New Mexico. Thousands of visitors come to Aguirre Springs to camp, hike, and experience the unique flora and fauna of the Chihuahuan Desert.

The Aguirre Spring Recreation area includes a scenic drive along Aguirre Spring Road, two National Recreation Trails and a campground. Baylor Pass Trail is a six-mile (one way) trail that traverses the Organ Mountains from east to west. Pine Tree Trail is a 4-mile loop trail. The Aguirre Spring Campground has a total of 55 individual campsites that are available on at a first come, first served basis. There are no group campsites. There are two group picnic shelter sites that can be reserved for day events or communal meals or activities for groups that are camping in individual campsites.

The primary duties of site hosts will be to oversee the campground, open and close entrance gates, patrol area trails, monitor recreation sites, and perform light maintenance/cleaning duties. If interested, hosts may also assist with other duties such as educational programs or maintenance. Hosts are expected to perform all duties while presenting a professional and polite image to the public and other BLM staff.

Site hosts will work 5 days per week and be supervised by a BLM park ranger. There will be a government vehicle available for official duties exclusive to the site host volunteers. A valid state driver's license is required. Site hosts will need to complete defensive driving, provided by the BLM before going on duty. Background checks may be required. There is no public transportation available to the site.

The campground hosts will reside at the campground host site. They will be in a fenced in yard that includes: a 30/50 amp RV electrical system, large and shaded pad for RV, water, sewage, washer, dryer, refrigerator, and freezer. There is also extra storage space in the fenced-in area for use by BLM employees to store equipment and supplies. Pets are allowed with prior approval.

If a couple, one host will be receive a stipend of $27 per day and the other host will receive a stipend of $12 per day. If only one individual, they will receive a stipend of $27 per day. Reimbursements are paid out once a month, but there can be extended delays subject to the workload/availability of employees processing it. Reimbursements are not stipends or salaries/wages and should not be relied upon as your sole source of income.

Expect hot summers with average temperatures in the high 90s and occasional thunderstorms. In the spring, high winds of 60 mph or above are common. Winter temperatures range from lows in the 30s to highs in the 60s.
