Luminary Hope For Cancer aims to offer a supportive space for these underrepresented voices. We seek to shine a light on the experiences of patients, healthcare professionals, and others grappling with medical issues. Through these narratives, we aspire to raise awareness and generate support for the most pressing challenges in our world today. In this volunteer program, we encourage participants to connect with cancer survivors or current patients to learn about their personal journeys, through zoom meeting, or text interview. Not only do volunteers gain insight into each patient's story, but their interviews also help spread awareness within the community, fostering a deeper understanding and driving improvement in the medical field. Each interview, along with its transcription, contributes a total of 6 volunteer hours (3 hours for the interview and 3 hours for transcription).

Step 1: Patient Selection

  • Identify and reach out to patients (going through treatment) or survivors through local hospitals/social media (Instagram, tiktok, facebook) / cancer support groups/or online forums focused on GI cancer.

  • Ensure the selected survivor or patient is comfortable sharing their story and has consented to participate in the interview.

Step 2: Preparing for the Interview

  • Schedule a time for the interview via Zoom or in-person, depending on the patient's preference.

  • Send a reminder to the patient a day before the scheduled interview, including details on how to join (if via Zoom).

Step 3: Conducting the Interview

  • Start with a brief introduction of yourself and Luminary Hope for Cancer.

  • Explain the purpose of the interview and assure the patient that their story will be treated with sensitivity and respect.

  • Use the following questions to guide the conversation, allowing the patient to elaborate on their experiences:

    1. Can you share your personal journey with cancer and how it has affected your daily life?

    2. What challenges have you faced in accessing the healthcare and support you need?

    3. Who has been your biggest support during your treatment, and how have they helped you?

    4. What message or awareness do you feel is important for the public to understand about cancer patients?

    5. How can non-profit organizations like Luminary Hope for Cancer better support patients like you in the future?

  • Listen actively and take notes to capture key points from their responses. If the patient shares particularly poignant stories or insights, feel free to ask follow-up questions to delve deeper.

Step 4: Closing the Interview

  • Thank the patient for sharing their story and for their time.

  • Ask if they have any final thoughts or additional messages they would like to share.

  • Inform them how their story will be used to raise awareness and support for others in similar situations.

Step 6: Documenting and Sharing Insights

  • Compile your notes and any recordings from the interview.

  • Copy the answer and upload to the Google Form
