Days and Hours: Weekly, Tuesdays or Thursdays, 4:30-6:00pm
Program Purpose : Helping K-3 students become better readers and build a strong foundation for lifelong learning.
Volunteer Role Description : During the Reading Buddies program, volunteers pair up with young readers for 15-minutes of one-on-one reading practice, working individually with 4-8 students each session depending on participation. Library staff will guide volunteers on book selections and tools appropriate for each student’s reading level.
Skills Requested : Interest in working with early elementary students (experience with this age group a plus), strong reading skills, and a positive and patient approach to supporting young readers.
Preferred Commitment : Weekly participation as a Reading Buddies Volunteer is preferred. Weekly service helps ensure that every child who participates in the program is matched with a buddy. This weekly commitment also allows for relationships to develop, and consistency for students who attend regularly. The time commitment each session is approximately 2 hours.
