Recruiting Organization: McClendon Center

Who We Are: McClendon Center is a District of Columbia nonprofit corporation recognized as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Since 1980, we have provided critical programs and services to DC’s most vulnerable residents -- those diagnosed with severe mental illness -- empowering them to live more independently and improve their quality of life. We have been accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations since 1999, and are consistently rated as among the highest-performing agencies by the DC Department of Behavioral Health’s Provider Scorecard.

Mission: To support and empower people on the journey to becoming their best selves.

Vision For Our Community: We envision a DC community that is educated about mental health and compassionate towards people recovering from mental illness. We envision a DC community that advocates and shows compassion for the behavioral health and overall well-being of people who exist in societal blind spots.

Vision For Our Clients: Our vision is for DC residents recovering from mental illness to become their best selves. Our vision is for DC residents recovering from mental illness to feel emotionally, socially and economically secure.

Who We Serve: Each year, we serve more than 4,500 DC adults diagnosed with severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia, bipolar and depressive disorders, PTSD, and anxiety. One-third of our clients are homeless or living in shelters. 91% of our clients are African-American.

What We Do: Our Core Services Agency provides clients with behavioral and health assessments, psychiatric treatment, counseling, medication management, community support, case management assistance, housing services, and post-hospitalization support. Our Day Program offers group therapy, designed to develop clients’ self-esteem and self-awareness, and increase their community living skills, through expressive arts therapy, substance abuse recovery groups, and clinical skills building. Counseling at Dupont offers quality, affordable individual, couples, and group psychotherapy services.

Who we seek: McClendon Center seeks Board members with a variety of expertise, professional experience, and skills sets, as well as racial and ethnic diversity to promote a Board composition that reflects our organization's clientele, a majority of whom identify as African-American.
