Fall Color Tracker - North Carolina

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

The Blue Ridge Parkway is seeking volunteer photographers to join its Fall Color Tracker Team. This project seeks to address the enormous public interest in just when and where to see the best fall color on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Our Fall Color Tracker team members adopt a location on the Parkway which may be an overlook, trail, waterfall, bridge, historic structure or other iconic autumn Parkway scene. They photograph that scene each week for the duration of the Fall Color Season and submit photos from their adopted location to the Parkway's Public Affairs Office to show the progress of the color change. Peak fall color varies significantly with location and elevation within the park’s boundaries. Our public affairs officer posts a selection of these Fall Color Tracker photographs each week to the Park’s social media pages to help the public plan their visits to the Parkway.

Many people around the world that are unable to visit in person enjoy the beauty of the Parkway through these photos. This work also creates a record that may be of interest to future scientific researchers interested in changes to forest composition and any shifts in the timing of the leaf change caused by climate change.
