The Refugee and Immigrant Student Empowerment (RISE) program is an educational enrichment program for recently arrived refugee and immigrant students in grades 9-12. RISE is delivered as a drop-in program that provides tutoring services to an average of 15-25 students a day. RISE aims to develop the academic skills and confidence to support the success of these students in American educational systems through tutoring, conversational activities, art-based activities, field trips and workshops.
RISE volunteers act as tutors, mentors and group facilitators. They provide academic support and assistance, facilitate activities and games (when needed) and help students practice English and build community. Volunteers can also participate in workshops and field trips.
