Washtenaw Promise is a non-profit organization with a mission to improve educational opportunities for children. We work primarily with young children, ages 3-6, who live in and attend schools in Washtenaw County. We are looking for volunteers for our Read with Kids program this fall/winter. Our Read with Kids program focuses on reading and literacy. We have partnered with The Children's Literacy Network to create an experience that is fun and educational for both students and volunteers. The Read with Kids program is designed to give students an opportunity for more one-on-one or small group reading time with an adult. Our goal is to reinforce reading skills and to help kids develop an even greater love of books and written language. Washtenaw Promise provides training to help every volunteer feel comfortable and successfully implement the program. We ask that volunteers dedicate at least one hour of their time a week. We hope that you will consider joining this program.

Location:

8949 Whittaker rd, Ypsilanti, MI 48197, US

Mission Statement

Our mission is to empower children in our community who are facing serious obstacles, to help raise their potential for success in the family, in school and in their world. Washtenaw Promise works with children, young families, schools and the community, to remove barriers such as the stresses of poverty, social injustice, and emotional challenges.

Description

Our "Big Friends" mentoring program places student volunteers into local preschools to work directly with kids and teachers. The "Penpal" program connects volunteers with a preschool student to exchange hand-written letters and drawings. Penpals encourage language development, the practice of writing, and recognition of letters, as well as inspiring imagination, creativity and self-confidence. Our "Read With Kids" program is designed to give students an opportunity for more one-on-one or small group reading time with an adult. Our intention is to work with teachers to reinforce reading skills and to help kids develop an even greater love of books and written language.
