Major Duties
Collect trash from shorelines, sort it, and package it. Follow defined protocols to identify, count, and measure trash and record data on paper or on digital devices such as iPads and camera. Volunteers will work in pairs or small groups.
Pre-registration is not required; walk-ins are welcome. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. All volunteers must sign a volunteer waiver. Please wear closed toed shoes and sun protection. Volunteers are encouraged to BYOB; bring your own reusable bucket, gloves, and water bottle. Instructions, volunteer waivers, data cards, trash and recycling bags, gloves, and water will otherwise be provided.
Work Location
Ventura Harbor beaches. Park near Channel Islands National Park Visitor Center, 1901 Spinnaker Drive, Ventura and follow signs to the event. Some work locations cannot be reached by road or trail and require cross-country travel from trails or shorelines.
Time Commitment
Three hours from 9 am to noon on September 21, 2024.
Qualifications (knowledge, skills, experience, ability)
- Experience walking over uneven terrain;
- Ability to follow standard operating procedures and research protocols;
- Skill in deciding which procedure to follow or whether supplemental assistance from staff is needed;
- Skill in collecting and recording accurate and precise data, including proofreading, as necessary;
- Experience communicating effectively with diverse personnel; and
- Ability to conform to standards of professional behavior including dress, punctuality, and interpersonal relationships.
