Event Description:
Wilson's Creek National Battlefield will be hosting the Memorial Luminary on Friday, November 15th from 5:30-10:30pm. We are hosting this event to commemorate all Civil War soldiers who were wounded, captured, missing, or killed in combat at the Battle of Wilson's Creek.
Interested applicants can participate in at least one service project associated with the Luminary.
In Late October and Early November, the park team will host four prep sessions on two different weekends. Here, they will provide training for volunteers who will assist with assembling luminary parts, such as triple-A batteries, flashlights, wooden boards and lunch bags. Park team will also assign volunteers to designated parts of the battlefield, both for placing and removing luminaries.
On Friday, November 15th from 9am-3pm, volunteers will also help us place 2,335 luminaries across the battlefield, with each one representing a casualty from the battle. We will also remove them from the battlefield the next day on Saturday, November 16th from 9am-1pm.
Participation in all of these projects is not mandatory to volunteer for the Luminary. We are looking for 15-20 volunteers per session to help with assembling luminary parts. Our most essential needs will be for placing and removing luminaries, where we hope to recruit large numbers of volunteers.
Work conditions involve standing, walking, bending, and kneeling on uneven terrain. Other conditions can also include tedious labor work for assembling luminary parts.
This is a great opportunity for families, scout units, school clubs/organizations, and high school and college students looking t o gain volunteer hours, particularly for removing luminaries.
How to Get Involved:
Please apply if you would like to volunteer for placing and/or removing luminaries. If you are only interested in assisting with prep sessions, please email the primary point of contact and we can offer dates that can best fit with an individual or a group's schedule.
