About Special Olympics BC:
Special Olympics BC (SOBC) provides year-round sports training and athletic competition for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Through sports, SOBC aims to empower athletes to showcase their abilities, build confidence, and experience the joy of participation and achievement.
The FUNdamental Program:
The FUNdamental program is a continuation of the Active Start program for children with intellectual disabilities between the ages of 7 and 11. Building on basic movement skills, FUNdamental introduces children to a variety of sports, emphasizing the development of sport-related motor skills. The program provides a fun and engaging environment where children can learn, practice, and build confidence while enjoying a sense of accomplishment and teamwork.
The FUNdamental program introduces the sports of soccer, softball, basketball, and track and field, providing children with the opportunity to learn and practice the skills necessary for participation in community or traditional Special Olympics programs.
Responsibilities:
- Plan and lead engaging physical activity sessions tailored to the needs of young athletes with diverse abilities and interests.
- Introduce the fundamentals of soccer, softball, basketball, and track and field through fun activities and games.
- Create a fun and inclusive environment that encourages participation, fosters teamwork, and promotes a love of movement.
- Work closely with volunteers to create a safe and supportive learning environment for all participants.
- Maintain a positive and encouraging attitude, fostering a sense of accomplishment and teamwork.
- Assist in incorporating basic nutrition information into the program through fun activities at the conclusion of each session.
Qualifications:
- Passion for working with young athletes and promoting physical activity in a fun and engaging way.
- Experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities is an asset but not required.
- Experience with any of the featured sports (soccer, softball, basketball, track and field) is an asset.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with children.
- Ability to create a positive and inclusive environment for all participants.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to plan and lead activities effectively.
Time Commitment:
- 1-2 hours per week for training sessions, depending on the program's schedule.
- Additional time may be required for special events or activities.

Next Steps:
- Criminal Record Check (CRC): You will be required to complete a CRC.
- NCCP Certification: As a FUNdamental Program Instructor, you will be required to obtain your NCCP (National Coaching Certification Program) certification. SOBC will cover the cost of this certification.
