The Hopewell-Prince George Friends of the Library is a non-profit whose mission is to support, improve, and promote the Appomattox Regional Library System, which services the libraries of Burrowsville, Carson, Disputanta, Hopewell, Prince George, McKenney, and Rohoic. The Friends of the Library raises funds through various means to finance new equipment and building upgrades for our libraries. The Friends of the Library funds the annual Summer Reading Program. They also fund the printing of the quarterly program guide. The Hopewell-Prince George Friends of the Library also fund and facilitate a number of special programs hosted by the libraries such as author talks, workshops, and our popular Poetry, Prose, and Pizza. The Friends also coordinate the donation of books across the community to nursing homes, schools, daycares, the VA, Free Little Libraries, and other community programs. As a member of the Executive Board, you will meet at least four times a year. Please make an effort to attend all board meetings and as many FOL-sponsored events as possible. You must also be a dues-paying member of the FOL. An individual membership is $10, and a lifetime membership is $100.

Mission Statement

The Appomattox Regional Library System (ARLS) fosters lifelong learning; provides open access to information, entertainment, and technology; cultivates the exchange of ideas; inspires personal growth; and encourages community engagement and gathering.

Description

The Appomattox Regional Library System (ARLS) operates eight library locations, four in Prince George County, three in Dinwiddie County, and one in the City of Hopewell. The name was chosen because the Appomattox River flows through each of the three localities that we serve. Library service began in Hopewell- Prince George area in 1930 when Thomas B. Robertson established a Library Association for persons interested in forming a library. In 1931, the city formally took over operation of the library, with Mrs. Maude Langhorne Nelson as its first librarian. The John Randolph Library, as it was then known, was located in the previous State Planters Bank Building on West Poythress Street. In 1957, the library was moved to the annex of the Municipal Building and the name was changed to honor the first librarian, Maude Langhorne Nelson. In 1974, Prince George and Dinwiddie Counties joined the City of Hopewell to form the Appomattox Regional Library System.
