Garden Club at Samuels Elementary
ORGANIZATION: Samuels Community Garden - Denver Urban Gardens
Please visit the new page to apply.
Do you love working with children? Are you free Wednesday afternoons from 2:00 - 3:30 pm from now until Oct 2? We need your help! We have 60+ elementary students signed up for our after school Garden Club, and we need enough adults to make this all work.
We are going to harvest and thresh wheat that the kids planted last spring. We're going to learn about bugs with real bugs caught at the garden. We are going to make pickles, and much more.
Please join us to help teach our future leaders where our food comes from. Ideally, we need you all four weeks from Sep 11 through Oct 2. However, if you can only make 2 or 3 sessions, we'd still love to have you. Bonus points if you speak Spanish!

Mission Statement
Mission: Denver Urban Gardens comes alongside residents, and together, we grow community - one urban garden at a time. DUG offers neighborhoods the essential resources for community gardens, including ongoing technical expertise with: 1. securing sustainable land for gardens; 2. designing and building gardens; 3. supporting garden organization, leadership, outreach and maintenance; 4. using gardens as extraordinary places for learning and healthy living; and 5. linking gardens with related local food system projects and policy. DUG currently operates over 135 community gardens throughout Metro Denver, including more than 40 school-based community gardens. In addition to building and supporting community gardens, DUG operates DeLaney Community Farm, the Master Composter Training Program, the Master Community Gardener Training Program, the Free Seeds and Transplants Program, and provides extensive opportunities for youth education in nutrition and gardening. https://dug.org/
Description
Samuels Community Garden is a school-based community garden affiliated with Denver Urban Gardens. We have about 40 families from the school and surrounding community, who come together to garden, grow food, teach the kids and enjoy nature. We run the Garden Club and the Garden-to-Cafeteria program with Samuels Elementary School. During harvest season we donate fresh produce from the garden to the Jewish Family Service food bank.
Volunteer jobs vary depending on the needs of the season, but there are opportunities year-round. We try to match jobs to our volunteers' abilities and interests. There are light work tasks and heavy work tasks, suitable for adults, kids, families, students and seniors. You can volunteer just once, or on a regular basis.
Regular opportunities include:
Monday Night Harvest
Compost Saturdays
Wednesday and Saturday Workdays
For volunteer opportunities tailored to you or your group, please contact us!
- Masks are now optional in the garden, but of course anyone is welcome to wear one if they feel more comfortable doing so.
