For over 60 years, we have been a provider of choice delivering much needed services and programs to adults with d evelopmental disabilities, including Autism, IDD, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and other similar conditions.Founded in 1958 as a non-profit residential school by parents, family, and community members, our philosophy has always been that persons with developmental disabilities are entitled to develop their optimum state of social, physical, and mental well-being, and share an integrated lifestyle similar to what non-disabled persons are fortunate to enjoy. Currently, Las Trampas provides day program educational and vocational services, residential services, supported and independent living services throughout Contra Costa County.

Role Description:

As a Board member, we are looking for candidates with a focus on corporate law and familiarity with the Lanterman Act. Ideally, we are looking for Board members with backgrounds in the non-profit or for-profit sector, who can advocate and create strategies to help Las Trampas better serve intellectually and developmentally disabled individuals and their families. This role is perfect for someone with a strong background in corporate law, a passion for philanthropy and a commitment to making a meaningful impact when it comes to giving back to the community.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of state & federal laws, rights, and services as they apply to intellectually and developmentally disabled Californians.
  • Familiarity with the Lanterman Act
  • Experience in the disability rights or justice movement and/or extensive contacts in the disability community.
  • Expertise in litigating civil cases in state or federal court, such as law and motion, discovery, trial, and appeals. Ideally, we need legal counsel to help the Las Trampas Board keep abreast of legal matters that involve disability-related issues and developments in the industry.
  • Competency with California compliance laws as they pertain to complex legal matters, and provide leadership and mentoring to our Executive Director and HR Manager.
  • Knowledge on a broad range of compliance, governance issues, employee benefits structuring, and board resolutions.
  • Excellent advocacy skills (such as research, writing, analytic, oral).
  • Help Executive Director and HR Director prepare legal documents and oversee trial cases and hearings as needed.
  • A keen ability to grasp complex legal and business issues quickly; balance risks; draw sound conclusions; and provide creative, practical, constructive and timely counsel in a dynamic environment.
  • Provide strategic legal counsel and general business law support as needed.
  • Oversee contract management, monitoring and tracking.
  • Help develop policies and procedures with the HR Manager and Executive Director as needed.
  • Help manage external legal resources.
  • Building consensus among diverse individuals.
  • Working closely with or being a member of Board of Directors.
