About the Project:
The Universal Language Contribution APIs (ULCA) is an open-source, scalable data platform designed to support the collection, management, and deployment of datasets for Indic languages. ULCA facilitates contributions in various NLP tasks such as Machine Translation (MT), Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), Text To Speech (TTS), Optical Character Recognition (OCR), and more. This platform also provides a user interface for interacting with datasets and models, allowing for extensive metadata analysis, quality checks, and benchmarking.
Role Overview:
We are seeking dedicated volunteers with experience in virtual private server (VPS) management to implement and fine-tune the ULCA platform on a VPS environment. As a VPS Implementation and Fine-Tuning Specialist, you will play a crucial role in setting up, optimizing, and maintaining ULCA on a secure and efficient server. Your contributions will ensure that the platform runs smoothly and is accessible to users and contributors.
Key Responsibilities:
- VPS Setup & Configuration:
- Install and configure the ULCA platform on a VPS, ensuring all dependencies and services are correctly set up.
- Optimize server performance, including CPU, memory, and storage configurations, to handle the platform’s demands.
- Implement security best practices to protect the platform and its data from unauthorized access.
- Platform Deployment & Optimization:
- Deploy the ULCA platform on the VPS, ensuring that all functionalities are operational.
- Fine-tune the ULCA codebase for optimal performance on the VPS, including scaling and resource management.
- Monitor server performance and make necessary adjustments to ensure reliability and responsiveness.
- Dataset & Model Integration:
- Assist in uploading, managing, and maintaining datasets on the platform, ensuring proper attribution and version control.
- Integrate NLP models with the platform, ensuring that inference endpoints are correctly linked and functional.
- Perform regular backups and updates to the platform, datasets, and models to maintain data integrity and platform stability.
- Documentation & Support:
- Create and update documentation related to the VPS setup, deployment process, and server management.
- Provide technical support to other contributors who may need assistance with the platform.
- Collaborate with other volunteers to continuously improve the platform and address any issues that arise.
Required Skills:
- Experience in managing and configuring virtual private servers (VPS).
- Strong understanding of Linux-based operating systems and server administration.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, with experience in working with open-source projects.
- Familiarity with cloud deployment, containerization (e.g., Docker), and version control systems (e.g., Git).
- Basic understanding of NLP models and tasks, particularly in the context of Indic languages.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail, with a focus on security and performance.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with ULCA or similar data platforms.
- Knowledge of web server technologies (e.g., Nginx, Apache) and database management.
- Familiarity with benchmarking and evaluation techniques for NLP models.
- Understanding of network security protocols and best practices.
- Knowledge of Indic languages and their linguistic challenges in NLP.
