The Education Leadership intern will be responsible for assisting the school principals with the day to day running of our K-9th school located in Jocotenango, Guatemala.

This will include assisting with photo copies, material distribution, entrance and exit processes, phone calls to parents, overseeing recess, assisting teachers with student or other needs, and organizing and facilitating special events such as summer school and graduation.

This position requires a high level of spoken and written Spanish as this position would work directly with a team who only speak Spanish. It requires previous experience working with children and a desire to learn more about how schools are run in Guatemala. Cross cultural experience or a desire to learn about new cultures and ways of doing things is a must. Artistic abilities are also desired as a lot of teaching materials are made by hand at the school.

The education leadership team is made up of 4 positions who directly manage the day to day running of both our elementary and junior high school which serves over 400 students from backgrounds of extreme poverty.

There is flexibility with this role to work in classrooms, directly with students and teachers as well as to implement special projects such as an after school club.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Create educational materials

  • Complete weekly photo copies submitted by teachers

  • Organize material distributions

  • Make phone calls to parents

  • Engage in the ever changing needs of the school, proactively seeking ways to contribute and support the leadership team

  • Volunteer directly in the classroom and if desired run special projects such as an after school club

  • Promote the EFTC mission, vision and core value at all times!

Benefits:

  • Continued support from the Education Leadership team and the Project Director throughout the duration of the position

  • Assistance in organizing a homestay and transportation from the airport

  • The opportunity to work in an international, multi-cultural environment

  • The opportunity to collaborate in the development of an organization working for the benefit of Guatemalan children

  • Future letters of Recommendation

About Education For The Children

Location:

1630 N MAIN ST #126, WALNUT CREEK, CA 94596, US

Mission Statement

EFTC's mission is to break the cycle of poverty through education and empowerment. We work in partnership with disadvantaged families, children and young adults in Guatemala to ensure they develop the tools they need to break free from the cycle of poverty.

Description

EFTC´s program, the School of Hope, serves over 650 students from kindergarten through university. Our students come from areas where extreme poverty, gang crime, domestic violence and alcoholism are everyday realities. In addition to education, we have a social services program which covers access to clean water, nutrition, health care, hygiene and psychological support. Many of our students are the first in their families to receive and education and their achievements provide new hope for generations to come.

When our school first opened in 2005, we had 80 students. Now, the school is made up of 675 students. Within our building, we have 469 students in "primaria" and "básico," ages 5-17. Our school has a fully bilingual program from reception to 2nd grade, and English classes for the rest of the school. We also have a full scholarship program with 206 students.

A key component of our school is the hard work of our volunteers. Volunteers play such an important role in supporting our incredible students and staff. They provide the time, the skills, and the experiences we don´t always have access to as an NGO. Your role as a volunteer will vary depending on your interests, length of stay, and language level. We are always looking for volunteers with unique skill sets. If you do not see a role that fits your qualifications or expectations, contact us to discuss other possibilities!
