Do you like learning about nature? Do you enjoy chatting with others about what they see outside? The Fairfield County Park District is looking for Nature Center and Program Assistant volunteers! You’d join a team of people passionate about our local nature who’d love to learn from you or help you learn more on your own nature journey.
Don’t just take it from me! Some of our current volunteer’s say:
"I like volunteering because I like nature, the opportunity to keep learning, and being able to share my knowledge with the visitors who come to our parks."
"Volunteering has been an incredibly rewarding experience. It’s also been a great opportunity to involve my family...we’ve made lasting memories together."
"I like volunteering as a way to be involved with nature and learn more about it."
Nature Center and Program Assistants volunteers usually volunteer about once a month but more frequently is great too! Programs can be at any time but are usually Friday - Sunday or in the evening. The Mambourg Park Nature Center is open Fridays and Saturdays 10am - 2pm. Some common tasks are
- Opening and closing the nature center.
- Greeting visitors and talking to them about the park and outdoors.
- Helping with educational programs and events.
- Helping groups stay together on hikes.
There are no qualifications necessary to become an Nature Center and Programs Assistant aside from possessing a great attitude and enjoyment of sharing a knowledge of nature with program attendees and visitors of all ages. Be aware that there may be significant downtime between visitors. Volunteers can chat with other staff/volunteers, read, bird watch, or bring a hobby to occupy themselves between visitors. Volunteers may be exposed to inclement weather, biting insects, noxious plants, and other risks associated with being in an outdoor setting.
All Fairfield County Park District volunteers are subject to a background check prior to
