National Public Lands Day - Beach Cleanup

In celebration of National Public Lands Day (NPLD), join Cape Lookout National Seashore in a beach cleanup on Shackelford Banks. Volunteers will enjoy beautiful ocean scenery while helping to remove marine debris and liter from the dunes. Participants will be expected to walk up to 8 miles or more on uneven terrain and in the direct sun.
What: Beach Cleanup
When:Saturday, September 28th from 9:00am -2:00pm Check-in begins at 9:00 am.
Where: West end of Shackleford Banks - meet at 701 Front Street, Beaufort NC 28516
The group will meet at 9:00am at the 701 Front Street, Beaufort NC 28516 and ride the 10:00am ferry to Westend of Shackleford Banks. The cleanup will last until 2:00. When we finish, you can enjoy the day on the beach and choose your return ferry. Those who are participating in the cleanup do not need to register with Island Express Ferry Service. The National Park Service will make the reservations.
We will be working outside all day, so we recommend wearing clothes to protect against the sun, such as long sleeves, hats, and sunglasses. Also, wear long pants to protect from ticks in the grassy areas. Bring water bottles, snacks, and bug spray. During this clean up, we plan on walking multiple miles to cover as much ocean side beach as possible.

Note the following:
- Participants do not need to make ferry reservations.
- Gloves, trash pickers, and trash bags are provided.
- Closed-toe shoes are recommended because we will be in the brush.
- This cleanup involves walking on sand and in the dunes. It is not wheelchair or stroller accessible.
- Event may cancel due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
- Youth under 18 must have a legal adult with them.
- If you apply on volunteer.gov, you still must (252) 838-8950 to register. We only have 20 spots left. We will have a waitlist incase people cancel.
