Job Title: Accountant

Reports To: Executive Director and Head of Finance

Duration: On-call for a few months leading up to the due date for taxes and financial reporting (approximately 2-4 months or less, depending on workload).

Position Type: Volunteer

Purpose of the Job:

The Accountant plays a vital role within Inspired 2 Uplift, responsible for managing the financial health and integrity of the organization. This position involves maintaining accurate financial records, preparing financial statements, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations. The Accountant collaborates closely with the Executive Director and the Head of Finance to monitor budgets, track expenditures, and support financial planning. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, with strong analytical skills and a deep understanding of nonprofit accounting practices.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Financial Record-Keeping: Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger entries, ensuring all transactions are recorded in compliance with accounting standards.

  • Budget Management: Collaborate with the Executive Director and Head of Finance to prepare, monitor, and manage organizational budgets, ensuring alignment with financial goals and organizational priorities.

  • Financial Reporting: Prepare detailed financial statements, reports, and summaries for internal and external stakeholders, including monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements that reflect the organization’s financial status.

  • Compliance and Auditing: Ensure compliance with all relevant financial regulations, laws, and nonprofit accounting standards. Support annual audits by preparing required documentation and liaising with auditors.

  • Payroll and Tax Management: Oversee payroll processing and ensure accurate calculation and timely payment of benefits, and taxes. Prepare and file necessary tax documents in accordance with government regulations.

  • Expense Tracking and Reconciliation: Monitor and track all organizational expenses, conducting regular reconciliations of bank statements and other financial accounts to maintain accuracy and transparency.

  • Financial Strategy Support: Provide financial insights and analysis to support strategic decision-making, advising on cost-saving opportunities, financial risks, and investment strategies to ensure long-term financial sustainability (optional, but preferred).

Job Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Location Requirement:

    • Must live in Canada and have experience working for a Canadian accounting firm. Applicants located outside of Canada will be instantly rejected.

  • Exceptional Numerical and Analytical Skills:

    • Strong ability to analyze financial data, identify trends, and provide actionable insights.

    • Attention to detail and accuracy in maintaining financial records and preparing reports.

  • Proficiency in Accounting Software:

    • Experience with accounting software such as QuickBooks, or other financial management tools.

    • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for financial analysis and reporting.

  • Experience in Nonprofit Accounting:

    • Previous experience in nonprofit accounting, or a related accountant field is required.

    • Familiarity with fund accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting in a nonprofit context is an asset.

  • Organizational and Time Management Skills:

    • Ability to manage multiple financial tasks and deadlines effectively.

    • Ability to work in a dynamic environment, adapt to changing priorities, and respond to evolving financial needs.

    • Willingness to work collaboratively with team members and respond to feedback.

Working Conditions:

  • Remote work with virtual meetings.

  • Flexible hours, with a commitment of approximately 2-3 hours per week (can vary more or less depending on workload).

Physical Requirements:

  • This role primarily involves sedentary work such as participating in meetings and working on a computer.

  • No specific physical exertion required.

As a student-led nonprofit organization, Inspired 2 Uplift is a collective of passionate students who are devoted to elevating the voices of those with disabilities. We actively advocate for disability-related causes and issues and are united by the belief that youth have a unique, powerful role to play in effecting positive change. Our chapters, located in various schools, are testament to this belief - each one a dynamic team of young advocates working tirelessly to make a difference. These bodies of students, inspired to uplift, are finding innovative ways to further disability-related causes in their own communities. Inspired 2 Uplift is a movement built by youth, for youth, transforming empathy into action, and creating a more inclusive world, chapter by chapter, student by student.
