This role is essential in ensuring the accuracy of tax returns for self-employed individuals, small businesses, and corporate clients. As a Quality Reviewer, you will use your expertise to review prepared tax returns, ensuring compliance with IRS standards and regulations, particularly focusing on the complex tax situations of self-employed individuals, small business owners, and corporations.

This volunteer role could lead to a part-time paid position during tax season, based on performance and organizational needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review tax returns prepared by volunteer tax preparers, specifically focusing on self-employment, small business (Schedule C), and corporate (1120/1120S) returns to ensure accuracy and compliance with IRS standards.
  • Ensure compliance with IRS rules and regulations, particularly those relating to self-employment, small business, and corporate taxation, including deductions, credits, and reporting requirements.
  • Identify potential errors and discrepancies in tax returns, and communicate them to preparers for correction.
  • Verify documentation and accuracy of income, deductions, credits, and compliance for self-employed, small business, and corporate taxpayers.
  • Provide guidance and clarification to tax preparers on complex tax issues related to self-employment, corporate taxation, including estimated taxes, allowable deductions, and income reporting.
  • Ensure the highest standards of quality are met for each tax return before submission to the IRS.
  • Assisting with delivering in-person workshops and webinars to interested self-employed taxpayers.

Qualifications

  • Licensed CPA, tax attorney, or enrolled agent with experience in tax preparation and review, including self-employed, small business, and corporate returns.
  • In-depth knowledge of IRS tax codes and procedures, specifically regarding self-employment (Schedule C), small businesses, and corporate returns (1120/1120S).
  • Familiarity with IRS guidelines for VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) programs is a plus.
  • Must take and pass the IRS VITA and SE Pilot certification tests with a score of 80% or higher.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to identify potential tax issues.
  • Excellent communication skills and a willingness to work collaboratively with volunteer tax preparers.
  • A strong passion for social and economic justice, anti-racism, and empowering the lives of low-income, senior, and immigrant populations.

Time Commitment

  • Flexible hours are available during tax season (September-January).
  • Volunteers are encouraged to commit to at least 4-8 hours per week.

Benefits

  • Use your expertise to make a meaningful impact in the community by helping low-income individuals, small business owners, and corporate clients.
  • Earn continuing education (CE) credits where applicable.
  • Gain valuable volunteer experience in tax law and client services.
  • Potential for part-time paid employment during tax season.
