Special Olympics BC (SOBC) provides year-round sports training and athletic competition for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Through sports, SOBC aims to empower athletes to showcase their abilities, build confidence, and experience the joy of participation and achievement.
Position Description:
Special Olympics BC - Burnaby is seeking passionate and dedicated volunteers for our Adaptive Ringette program. In this role, you will work closely with athletes with intellectual disabilities to help develop their ringette skills, foster a love for the sport, and promote physical fitness and teamwork.
About the Program: The Adaptive Ringette program provides athletes with inclusive and accessible participation in the sport of ringette. We focus on skill development, teamwork, and having fun in a supportive environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Program Support: Assist coaches in organizing and facilitating engaging practice sessions. Help create a positive atmosphere where athletes can learn and enjoy the sport.
- Athlete Engagement: Encourage athletes during training by offering motivation, support, and celebrating their progress. Foster an inclusive environment where every athlete feels valued.
- Skill Development: Help teach ringette skills and techniques, assisting athletes in practicing their skills and participating in drills.
- Event Participation: Support athletes during games and competitions, ensuring they are prepared and confident to showcase their skills.
- Team Collaboration: Work closely with coaches, and fellow volunteers to ensure a unified approach to training. Promote effective communication and teamwork within the program.
- Community Building: Build strong connections with athletes and their families, helping to foster a sense of community and inclusion in the Adaptive Ringette program.
Qualifications:
- A passion for sports and a desire to work with individuals with intellectual disabilities.
- Previous experience in sports, especially ringette or ice hockey, is an asset but not required.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to motivate and inspire athletes.
- Commitment to creating a positive and welcoming environment for all participants.
- Ability to work effectively within a diverse team and engage with the community.
Time Commitment:
- 1-2 hours per week for training sessions
- Additional time may be required for competitions and events
