Help keep local history alive by volunteering at the historic Rock Mill! Originally built in 1799 over a gorgeous sandstone gorge Rock Mill has been a cornerstone of the area from the very beginning. We need people passionate about keeping memories alive like you though to keep it a vibrant place for years to come. As one of our current volunteers says, "I talk with people and make history come alive in some small way for them. That is mainly why I volunteer." Whether you’re intrigued but don’t know anything or someone who’s been involved in local history for years we’d love your help.
Rock Mill is open to the public May - October Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday, with period accurate grinding taking place the last Sunday of each month. Volunteers at Rock Mill help out about once a month or more frequently. Some common tasks are:
- Opening and preparing mill for operation.
- Learning about the mill and sharing that knowledge with visitors.
- Helping operate the water wheel and other parts of the milling process.
- Ensuring visitor safety in the gorge and around moving parts.
There are no qualifications necessary to become a Greeter at Rock Mill aside from
possessing a great attitude and enjoyment of sharing a knowledge of the mill’s history and
processes with visitors of all ages. Volunteers may be exposed to inclement weather, biting
insects, noxious plants, and other risks associated with being in an outdoor setting and depending on jobs you sign up for may be located near large moving parts of the mill.
All Fairfield County Park District volunteers are subject to a background check prior to
beginning volunteer activities. Reach out to volunteer@fairfieldcountyparks.org with questions or to find the application visit https://www.fairfieldcountyparks.org/get-involved/volunteer/!
