The Archaeological Research Institute is looking for volunteers to help at the ARI Adventure Trek!

Info about the event is below with duties to follow:

A mentally and physically challenging fundraising event and party for everyone. Learn about what archaeologists do when they find an artifact! Complete the challenges the fastest to win a prize! After the race, enjoy vendor booths, a cookout, and learning activities for the whole family! Where does the run take place? At the Guard Archaeological Preserve and the Oxbow in Lawrenceburg, IN. When: Rain or Shine September 21 st (Weather Delays for thunderstorms & high winds). Packet Pickup: 8:00 AM on the day of the race.
  • Adventure Trek begins at 9:00 AM with staggered starts by decision
  • Adults 18+, Children 3yrs-17yrs
Adventure Trek Event Duration: 1.5-2 hours After Party: 10:30 AM- 4:00 PM

We are in need of volunteers to help staff with our event. Duties will include:

  • Activity resets: We will have 7 challenge stations set up with a different activity that will have to be reset each team a team passes through.
  • Timing contestants at each station: Keeping start and stop times of contestants as they complete challenges at each station
  • Stamping passports at each station: Each team will be given a passport with challenges listed that will get stamped times, and an area for bonus points that can be filled out.
  • Shuttling with golf carts or van (if need be): Contestants will be parking at Hollywood Casino and can walk over to the Oxbow. We will have golfcarts and a van for those with accessibility needs.
  • Trash pickup: Overall trash disposal throughout the day.
  • Extra hands during the open house: We will have a grill out and vendors after the race and will need help welcoming people, preparing food, and monitoring a smooth flow of traffic.
  • Set up: Set up activities, welcome booth, and grilling area.
  • Take down: Take down activities, welcome booth, and grilling area.
Volunteer shifts can be all or split into two shifts- race and open house. The Archaeological Research Institute is always looking for new volunteers to diversify our program and support our mission of educating current and future generations about past cultures through the investigation, identification, and preservation of native and non-native sites. Your time and effort can make a difference!

To educate future and current generations about the ancient cultures of the tristate region through identification, preservation, and archaeological investigations of sites in this region.

Description

ARI is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit institution dedicated to research into Native American sites in the Indiana-Ohio-Kentucky region. Located in Indiana, ARI operates offices and labs in Lawrenceburg, IN, and is currently supporting excavations at the Guard site, a nearby early Fort Ancient Village, near the mouth of the Great Miami River. These excavations are conducted under the supervision of professional archaeologists, and there are professional archaeologists with extensive experience in Fort Ancient studies on ARI’s board.

ARI was created by passionate local avocational and professional archaeologists that have witnessed the unfortunate destruction of many important and sacred prehistoric sites in the area. Sites that continue to be destroyed due to a lack of knowledge and appreciation of the rich and extensive history that exists in our region prior to colonial settlement. ARI’S passionate founding members felt that an organization that focused on providing educational opportunities to the public through hands-on experiences, literature, lectures, tours, a learning center, and other digital educational tools that an informed and appreciative community could be cultivated. Thereby resulting in better stewardship of our region’s cultural resources.
