The After-School Program Volunteer plays a vital role in supporting the daily operations of Freedom City’s after-school program. Volunteers will assist Classroom Teachers with various tasks, including supervising students, preparing materials, and helping maintain an organized learning environment. In addition to general classroom support, volunteers will work individually with students, providing targeted tutoring in reading and math to reinforce key concepts and improve academic performance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist Classroom Teachers with daily tasks such as setting up activities, organizing materials, and supervising students during program hours.
  • Provide one-on-one or small group tutoring in reading and math, following the curriculum provided by the program.
  • Reinforce reading concepts such as letter recognition, phonics, and comprehension, and math concepts including number recognition, basic arithmetic, and problem-solving skills.
  • Monitor and assess student progress during tutoring sessions, reporting any concerns or successes to the Classroom Teacher.
  • Engage students in interactive learning activities that are both educational and enjoyable, fostering a positive attitude towards learning.
  • Help maintain a safe, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment, addressing any behavioral or academic challenges in collaboration with the Classroom Teacher.
  • Communicate regularly with the Program Coordinator and Classroom Teachers to discuss student needs, program improvements, and any challenges encountered during volunteer shifts.

Qualifications:

  • A passion for helping students succeed.
  • Patience, empathy, and strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with and motivate students.
  • Previous experience in tutoring, education, or working with children is a plus, but not required.
  • Commitment to Freedom City’s mission and values, with a willingness to be a positive role model for students.
